Description

Take the challenging and less traveled Lemosho route up Africa's highest peak. This route is considered by many to be the most beautiful route up the Western Breach of the mountain to the Shira Plateau. The adventure begins with long hikes where you gain elevation gain, and includes a few days to help you acclimatize and increase your chances of reaching the summit. Enjoy the climb through breathtaking forests and moorland. You'll come out at a high alpine mountain desert and enjoy spectacular views on the way to the summit.

 

Day 1 Moshi

Your opportunity to meet the CEO and your fellow travelers and learn more about your trip. Decide to have a meal with the group afterwards on site. Please refer to the lobby notice (or ask at the front desk) for the official time and location to meet with the group.

 

Day 2 Moshi/Mti Mkubwa Camp

You will start the Lemosho Trail of Kilimanjaro and end the day at Mti Mkubwa Campsite.

Register at the office at the gate and begin the hike with a leisurely climb and a short descent down into the Lemosho Glades. Here you will walk through lush rainforest and not only listen to the songs of numerous exotic birds, but also spot monkey species such as the black and white stumpy monkey. These monkeys have black fur with a "cape" of long white hair and a white tail. Spend the day in the beautiful and fascinating forested slopes of Kilimanjaro, mostly in the rainforest zone. The day ends at Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree) at the top of the forested zone.

Day 3 Mti Mkubwa Camp/Shira 1 Camp

Get up early and start the steep climb from the wooded area up to the moorland. Here you can admire plants like giant heather and heather. Today you have a challenging day hike ahead of you. It goes over the Shira to 3.500 m, from where you have a direct view on cloudless days to the Kibo, the summit and the ultimate goal of our adventure. From there we descend to the Shira Plateau and Shira 1 Camp.

Day 4 Shira 1 Camp/Shira 2 Camp

Cross the Shira Plateau. You will have time for short acclimatization walks.

Since the trekking time today is only about 3 hours, you can use the free time to do some short acclimatization walks around and above Shira 2 Camp. This camp is more unprotected than the previous night's camp. It can be windier and colder and temperatures may drop below zero.

Day 5 Shira 2 Camp/Barranco Camp 

Start the slow ascent from Shira 2 Camp through the rocky terrain to Lava Tower (4,600m). The route becomes more difficult and steeper (about 4h). Then descend 650 m from Lava Tower into the Great Barranco Valley. It's about a two-hour hike down to the valley, where you can get used to the elevation gain and enjoy the views of Western Breach and Breach Wall.

Day 6 Barranco Camp/Karanga Camp

The steady climb up the east side of the great Barranco rock face begins. The trail to Karanga Camp (4100 m) runs below the Heim Glacier and through the alpine desert of the Karanga Valley. In good weather, a fantastic view of Kilimanjaro awaits you at the Heim Glacier.

Day 7 Karanga-Camp/Barafu-Camp

Hike through the mountain desert to Barafu Camp. Prepare to begin the climb to the summit at midnight.

To prepare for the final ascent that same night, familiarize yourself with the terrain before nightfall and prepare your gear and thermal clothing for the summit assault. Sleeping can be difficult, but lie down after dinner to try and rest up for the final 1,295m climb.

Day 8 Barafu Camp/Mweka Camp

The summit assault begins at midnight. Conquer the rim of the main crater and then climb through scree and snow to Uhuru Peak. Descend to Mweka Hut.

This is the longest and most mentally and physically challenging section of the hike. But the feeling of having conquered Mount Kilimanjaro will remain in your memory forever.

Day 9 Mweka Camp/Moshi

Continue the descent over the forested lower slopes to Moshi. Meet the women of the Moshi Women's Cooperative supported by G Adventures at a climbing ceremony.

Arrive in Moshi in the afternoon. You'll have time to relax, shower, and enjoy a drink. Congratulations on your climb up Kilimanjaro! Before dinner, you will be greeted by the mamas of the Moshi Women's Cooperative, a project supported by G Adventures, and congratulated on your climb. To commemorate all your efforts on the mountain, they will present you with a gift and certificate.

Included Meals

This includes all meals during the trek on the mountain as well as breakfast in Moshi on the last day after the trek. All meals you eat during your trip will be prepared from fresh local produce. Grocery shopping will be done before departure. Breakfast and dinner are served at camp, while lunch is usually packed to be eaten on the trail. All evening meals are hot and consist of a variety of continental and local dishes. We believe that adequate food is of paramount importance during such a trek, and therefore you can be assured that your cook and crew will provide you with sufficient quality food. Vegetarian meals and other dietary requirements must be specified prior to arrival.
